My Haole husband is actually part Hawaiian and grew up in Hawaii just like I did. BUT while he loves rice and expects it every meal except when we eat spaghetti, he butters his rice! Yuck!

Unfortunately, as hard as I tried to teach our Hapa kids the “right” way to eat rice, they too love it with butter.

On the other hand, I managed to get my daughter to love Natto (stinky fermented soybeans that even many Japanese can’t stand) and my husband has said we can eat natto on days he is not home.

To his credit, he did try to eat it and just could not swallow it, literally.

When my wife and I got marred I didn’t know what to expect for the wedding. All I knew is that her Mother was planning the entire thing. As the months went by I started noticing the piles of supplies at there house and the stacks of invites.

Out of all these invites I only had maybe 10 and that’s including the 6 groomsmen I had to find. Good thing for me I’m in the military and work with a lot of people.

Well, the day of the wedding got there and they had rented a huuuuuge hall. Our ceremony and reception were in the same place. We had our ceremony, walked out and the place was turned into the reception hall.

What really caught me off guard was the amount of people. I now have more Aunties and Uncles then I know what to do with. I forgot more names then I will ever remember.

My Wife will ask me if I remember so and so and I just give her a blank stare. I also learned that a Polynesian reception isn’t finger food and cake. There was more food on that buffet then I have ever seen, even at a Golden Coral. There were also more food that I have never seen before, but I have learned, never ask, just try it.

Now my wife is also a Polynesian dancer. So along with the wedding, we also had a show. So there we are at our wedding and she had to dance. When she danced the Hawaiian wedding song for me, I had tears running.

Now remember I said a Polynesian dance group so we have everyone (I say we because I am now the DJ). We have Hawaiian, Samoan, Mori, Tahitian, and Chamorrans, get the picture, and I am one of 3 Haoles in the group.

If you have never been to a celebration with Samoans, I suggest you go to one. Now there is one downfall of a party with Samoans as a Haole, definitely when the dance instructor is Samoan.

You have to do the Taualunga. The Taualunga is the money dance and it is traditional for the host/hostess start the dance. Here’s the problem, I can’t even do the Texas Two Step, and with no prior training

I had to get in front of 200 plus guests and dance. I saw the wedding tape later and let me just say I wish I could erase myself out of that dance.

It makes for a good laugh watching me try to dance a Samoan song in Dress Blues (US Marine). We have now passed our 3yr anniversary and I don’t regret a day that I met my beautiful Wahine.
