When your local wife laughs at your attempts at speaking pidgin in the privacy of your home, this is not a go-ahead to do it in public in Hawaii EVER, especially in front of some big scary-looking dude.

Exception: if she asks you to say something in front of your friends (for entertainment only), it’s okay.

My husband can actually do a pretty good “Eh, what?” but I guess that’s pretty rudimentary.

Spam musubi

I had been living on the mainland for, oh, I guess about 4 years. I had really been missing Spam musubi so the next time I went home, I bought a Spam musubi maker and nori. I was so excited.

My first day back on the mainland I cooked the rice and the Spam and made my musubi. My husband comes into the living room, audibly sniffing, and asking what the horrible smell was. He wanted to ban my musubi from the house. I was understandably upset.

We finally compromised. I could have my Spam musubi as long as it never left the kitchen and I kept the doors closed.
