When your local wife laughs at your attempts at speaking pidgin in the privacy of your home, this is not a go-ahead to do it in public in Hawaii EVER, especially in front of some big scary-looking dude.

Exception: if she asks you to say something in front of your friends (for entertainment only), it’s okay.

My husband can actually do a pretty good “Eh, what?” but I guess that’s pretty rudimentary.

Instead of insisting that he pronounce things correctly, let him give his friends that come to visit from the mainland driving directions and let him spell out his phonetic pronunciation. When they get lost and you give them the correct spellings of the streets, they will never let him live it down.

Here’s one: I am japanese my wife is haole. On one of their many visits, my in-laws were with us at our home when my wife and I got into an argument.

My father-in-law, who is one of the smartest man I know, pulled me on the side and gave me some great advice. He told me that when you are married, you got to learn how to eat sh-t!

If that doesn’t work, tell your wife that her “old man”" [her father] is as as-ho-e, and that will really give me some points!

He must be right because we have been married for 9 yrs. and it seems more like 90.

That rubber slippers are not called flip flops and that you have to grip them with your toes when you walk. Easier said than done when you grew up with sneakers!

That you have to respect your Japanese elders even though they can be very annoying. Bite your tongue and show them respect.

That when people refers to you as “haole,” they don’t mean “#%@! haole,” just as “that Pake” refers simply to a persons ancestral background.

That Hawaiian time really does mean “late.”

That local people don’t like bullshitters, so don’t say things you don’t mean. We’re not easily fooled.

We travel in boxes.

Ama crab are not called spider crabs.

We don’t see sashimi as RAW fish, even though it is.

Mahalo does not mean “trash”.

When Mom “insinuates, ” she really means what she says.

I have to convince my husband that good Chinese restaurants may not have table cloths on the tables but that almost all of the customers are usually Asian.

Another feature…the soup and the tea better be served very hot!

Hi again,
I have other haole stories to tell….

1. My husband & I went to Manila to visit my family & he was amazed that even my uncle, auntie, cousins & nephews came by to pick us up at the airport.

2. He developed a habit of sometimes calling me with “Pssssst…” ie what other Pinoys do when they try to get your attention.

3. One time we went to the Aloha Swap Meet & I mentioned that I wanted to get the 8 Tshirts for $20 so I can send them all in a balikbayan box.

He wonders too why I bought so many out of season sale of chocolates. I mentioned that we can bring them home when we visit my family or send them in the balikbayan box.

This is all for now…
