Ohh, I forgot to mention, Amber, that many Vietnamese folks don't want their chilren to marry White people because of their fear that White people are too quick and easy to get divorces. In Vietnamese culture, divorce is a No-No! So do your best to prove that your love to each other is forever. Good luck, hon! :-)

Hi Amber,

Your situation is typical due to the fact that many of us Free Vietnamese feel bitterness after American betrayed us to the communists in 1975. But this is a purely political item that many of us unfortunately associate with other items such as race and culture.

My best advice to you is this: hang on there! Remember that love conquers all, including family. Both of you need to let together and be very frank to each other and with one another. I'm serious, maybe both of you are deceiving each other and don't even know it. For example, if your boyfriend absolutely loves you, then he would marry you no matter what. And that means risking being cut off from his family (which will not happen and I will explain this later on). But if his love for his family is stronger than his love for you, then he needs to be frank both to himself and to you about it. In this case, there is little chance for marriage.

But believe me, the parents are just bluffing. Viet parents always love to use this threat as their trump card. Once you two are happily married and have beautiful children, your future in-laws will be fighting over each other to play with them. Believe me, I know this for a fact since I'm a Free Vietnamese myself. LOL!!!

If you need more help or questions, please feel free to contact me at: ldo1@babson.edu. Good luck with you two, OK? Also, pray to GOD and ask for HIS blessings. That is so important for your happiness.

Congrats. You two are great together.

If you don't mind me asking, was it hard being accepted by the Vientnamese family? My boyfriend is Vietnamese and we are in a serious relationship with marriage in our future. However, it has just been put to a hault due to the fact his parents do not want him marrying outside his race. They will not even MEET me. They are basing their decision on past relationship in the family with Americans. I meet all the criteria they want in a daugher n-law but my race. Nothing we can do will change their mind so he is pretty much giving up. Any words of wisdom you can give me would be great.... your picture gives me hope! :) Thanks!
