When we were dating, my husband said he never liked food with shoyu in it. I told him I put it in just about everything I had cooked for him. He never mentioned that again.
My son and I used to get REALLY embarrassed when my husband asks for butter to put on his rice at a Japanese or Chinese restaurant. He did it once at a local Japanese place. The waitress said fine, no problem and left. There was a mirror in a hallway where we could see her just standing. She came back and told him, sorry, they didn’t have any. He has not done that since (much to the relief of my son and I).
To his credit, he has gotten better and even uses pickled ginger on fish.
